This month we were honored to welcome Dr. Carolyn Becker and Sarah Williamson from the Reflections: Body Image Program and Tri Delta. Fat Talk Free Week is a 5-day nationwide awareness and advocacy event that our MentorCONNECT community will be participating in annually. Dr. Becker and Sarah shared empowering and powerful insights into the origins of “fat talk” and immediate ways we can begin to take action to love our bodies and ourselves just the way we are.

Two of my personal favorites were signs that Fat Talk Free Week participants posted around college campuses - one was a sign on mirrors that stated, “You don’t have to look twice - you are beautiful just the way you are”, and the other was a sign that a runner posted for herself that said, “I (heart) my legs because they helped me run fast.” What beautiful ways to express our love and appreciation for the body that serves us so well - and without complaint!

www.bodyimageprogram.org is the official Fat Talk Free Week website that has information about the curriculum as well as the science behind it. Also be sure to bookmark www.endfattalk.org, a special micro-site that launches October 5, 2009, with statistics, daily challenges, plenty of ideas for how to bring Fat Talk Free Week to your organization or campus, and a countdown to October 19th that concludes with a special video presentation.
